Why We Should All Emulate Betsy DeVos

Posted by TroPe on

Betsy DeVos is a woman to be emulated. Not just by American women, but by all Americans in general. She is a businesswoman, politician, reformer and philanthropist. Fortunate enough to amass wealth in their lifetime, DeVos and her husband, Dick, have put a considerable portion of it towards helping those in need in the areas of leadership, arts, justice, community support, and education.

Betsy and Dick DeVos founded the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation in 1989. The two saw the foundation as a platform to both help and express their ideals on what is good and how people can uphold being good. As a result, the Foundation is greatly focused on faith and has on numerous occasions supported evangelical missions, Christina schools and a raft of other conservative programs. A look at foundations educational support in the 15 years between 1999 and 2015 shows that the Foundation extended the greatest deal of support towards Christian schools, with donations amounting to close to $9 million, followed by charter schools, which received donations amounting to approximately $5 million, while public schools came last with a small donation of $59,750. Read more about her philanthropy at MLive.

Betsy DeVos greatest impact has been in the field of education. While most of the fame she has garnered in the education sector stems from her various endeavors to reform the system to take the best structure possible, she has also been helping students from all around the country access quality education even while the reform is ongoing. Since before the formation of her family foundation, DeVos has provided outstanding, but less able, students, with scholarships. She has also provided funds to schools that have performed exceptionally well. For example, in 2014 alone, the family foundation gave $652 thousand to the Ada Christian School alone.

The organization has also done a lot beyond educational-focused donations. In totality, the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation is estimated to have raised approximately $139 million between its formation in 1989 and 2015. Programs targeted at the arts have received significant donations both from the Foundation and directly from DeVos. The DeVos family in 2009 launched a free-to-all art competition that is held every year in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Additionally, DeVos has in individual capacity greatly supported the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. In 2010, she gave the Center its largest private donation when she provided $22.5 million. The donation was aimed at helping the Center continue with its practical and creative communities following the global financial crisis that had hit only two years earlier. Visit Betsy’s profile page on facebook.com.

It is very calming that such a kind-hearted individual has recently been selected as the incumbent Secretary of Education for the country. If she continues as she has with her philanthropic and reformist past, there is no doubt that America has little to worry about in Betsy DeVos’ hands.

Sujit Choudhry Expresses his Thoughts about the Constitutional Instability of Ukraine

Posted by TroPe on

Sujit Choudhry, an internationally recognized constitutional expert, expressed his thoughts about the constitutional instability of Ukraine. He was speaking at a workshop conducted in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, on July 10 with other scholars were also expressing their views. The workshop was focusing on various constitutional challenges and the semi-presidential system of the country. The workshop was conducted by the Center for Policy and Legal Reform – a Ukrainian think tank– and International IDEA – an organization working for sustainable democracy across the world.

Choudhry noted that multiple factors contribute to the unstable condition of the Ukrainian democracy with too much power concentrated in the hands of President being the primary reason. Though the executive branch has a prime minister, President assumes excess powers that remove the possibility of proper checks and balances – leading to rampant corruption. Also, the electoral system for the legislature is poorly designed, and the political parties are very weak. The separation of powers between President and the Prime Minister is another major issue as many of the executive powers are either overlapped or not clearly defined. For more of Sujit’s insights, click activistpost.com.

Sujit Choudhry stated that clear separation of powers should be constituted for a stronger democracy. He joined with other experts and discussed on various solutions including the design of a clear and transparent semi-presidential system for the country as it can be more productive and meaningful. It would limit the presidential powers and ensure a constitutional stability. Additionally, it can strengthen the weak Ukraine legislature and make it capable of putting checks on both government and the President.

Securus Technologies on the Hunt for Fugitives

Posted by TroPe on

When my fugitive task force has to hunt down a suspect, we will make use of any resource possible. This month we had a very challenging situation on our hands, a dangerous fugitive was getting help from a local gang to keep him out of the spotlight, so he could commit his crimes and slip into their safety net at night. Each time we tried to get closer, he would simply disappear behind the shield of the members of that gang. Without informants, family, or friends, this was going to be a very difficult job of getting the suspect into custody.

When we made a visit to the jail to try and get some help from inmates, it became apparent how difficult this was going to be. The huge population of inmates in the jail were all aware of our presence and none were willing to do anything to hurt one of their own. Little did they know that was exactly what we were hoping for, because we had Securus Technologies on our side. The inmate call monitoring system was capable of listening to all the calls made by inmates and locating specific chatter pertaining to our suspect.

What happened next was the inmates took to the phones as expected, and they were trying to get a message to their brothers that we were getting closer. What they didn’t realize is that those low-level gang members had no filters, and they were yelling and screaming about things that could have gotten them in trouble with the higher-ranking gang members. We took the information we gathered from the Securus Technologies and we raced to the location the inmate was whining about, and we were able to identify exactly where the fugitive was in hiding. Now he is reunited with brothers in the jail he deserved to be in.

Sujit Choudhry – A Force Behind Changing Constitutions in Emerging Democracies

Posted by TroPe on

An interview of Sujit Choudhry reveals a lot about him especially as far as constitutional changes are concerned. Sujit heads the Center for Constitutional Transitions which is an organization that leads to the generational and mobilization of knowledge and support of Constitution construction. This happens through the assembly and other intentional expert networks that produce evidence based policy options. The organization, under Sujit’s leadership, has worked with a variety of think tanks, multilateral organizations as well as NGOs among other interested partners with the same goal.

Sujit Choudhry explains that the move to establish CCT was inspired by the many years that he has worked in the field as a constitutional adviser for emerging democracies around the world. Through his experience, he has come across a lot of knowledge as well as inquires surrounding the constitutional transitions. His experience has revealed that most of these newly formed democracies sometimes experience problems even after the formation of the Constitutions because there is no useful information available to them to refer since most of what is available is untrue or even outdated. In most cases, there is no information at all. Therefore, the lack of concrete competent information on these issues interferes with the effective implementation of constitutions.

Sujit studied comparative constitutional law. He feels that the current political interest is because of the greatest global challenge to liberal democratic constitutionalism from the Second World War. There is a need for comparative studies since what the US believes in is not the case as evidenced by those who travel the world on this subject. Sujit believes that America should learn from the successes and failures of other countries.   Check this recently written article of Sujit on activistpost.com.
