In the letter, Sujit Choudhry and other scholars directed the president Puigdemont to show his unwavering commitment towards their plans to withdraw from Spain. And the best way to do this, Sujit Choudhry advised, is to arrange a referendum that will confirm the people’s desires.

The letter also asked the Spain Prime Minister to avoid any activities or intentions that will potentially jeopardize the desires of the Catalan people and to make sure that they do it peacefully.

Sujit Choudhry along with other scholars pointed out that referendum is the only way that will make many to finally understand the desires of Catalan people and that if their needs are not met, there could be some difficulties in enforcing Spanish constitution.

And after the desire is granted, both parties should come together and make constitutional changes that will recognize the rights and freedom of both parties.

The letter was authored by Sujit Choudhry and carried ideas and opinions from other constitutional scholars. They expressed their opinion in a way that the conflicting parties in Catalonian should respect the desires of the people and attend to their problems peacefully without infringing on anyone’s rights.

Sujit Choudhry also indicated that the situation in Catalonian is not new and has caused considerable damages in the past. And the fact that Mr. Puigdemont decision to postpone the independence declaration should be applauded as the right decision made to give more time for dialogue.
